pleather gone wrong. really wrong. {i call a do-over.}

October 31, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout Leave a Comment

pleath·er = plastic + leather

We’re sure pleather has it’s place….but it certainly wasn’t on this great &  functional little mid-century storage ottoman.  Now that she has been re-padded and given a new little outfit, she’ll be a perfect place to stash the magazines and remotes.Find this piece & many other vintage items in our etsy shoppe.

crack is WACK….{i call a do-over.}

October 17, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout Leave a Comment

Crack IS wack…..like when you find a super gorgeous Thonet  bentwood chair with cracked vinyl.  That’s just what we did on our last scouting mission. She was just sitting there, lookin’ for a little lovin’ and we had just the rehab in mind for her sad self.

You might recognize this textile as one we used on our “Portly to Poppy” do-over a bit back.  We just couldn’t resist using it again on this beauty, with her gorgeous curves and strong structure….she was dying for a new outfit to bring her out of a funk.  Done.

Find her for sale in the goods or right in our etsy shoppe.

from Fire hazard to Fresh. {i call a do-over.}

October 10, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout 2 Comments

When we entered this original mess into an ugly lamp contest, it was said “You cannot hot glue pom-pom trim to an apple basket and call it a lampshade.  Well, I guess you can, but you can’t do that and get to call it cute.  But you know what you can call?  The fire department, when this  ill-conceived fire-hazard goes up in flames.”

We’ve taken her from a hazardous to super sweet in a snap and think this little pink darling would be the perfect addition to a girlie bedside table.   You can find her in the goods and in our etsy shoppe.

Brassy to sassy in a snap. {i call a do-over.}

Give us a plant and we’ll be sure to kill it within a matter of a week.  Give us an afternoon to SCOUT and we’ll find something to breathe a little new life into.  During one of our last marathonSCOUTS, we found this sad and lonely plant trivet.  She needed a little love, some color and a roughing up for good measure.

Amazing what a little elbow grease, wise color choice & spray painting will do.  Find her for sale in the sugarSHOPPE

a bright & Curvy girl. {i call a do-over.}

September 26, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout 2 Comments

What to do when you see a girl with potential just sitting there, all by herself?  Although she was wearing a boring outfit, she certainly was curvy and we knew she could light up a room if given the chance.

isn’t she saucy?  Find her cute self in the shop.

wooly stool do-over goodness. {i call a do-over.}

September 19, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout 6 Comments

she is rustic gorgeous. no doubt.

Every girl you find on the roadside isn’t trash, and here’s proof.  We could not believe our eyes when we spotted those legs on the curb………and left there?  Crazy.

The blanket was as garage sale find.  Hand knit in super soft wool in a color combination we couldn’t refuse.  Nicely felted and used to perfection.  Just how we like it.  She needed some repairs so we were stumped as to how we could do that and retain the integrity of her state.

Then, like a flash of crafty brilliance, we decided we could spread the love and use her as yardage.  Ooooh, good plan.  So we cut the size we needed and backed her in muslin for strength and stability.  Using knit on a piece of furniture will work, but needs strength of a woven to hold her shape.  (and we all know how hard it is to hold your shape)

Then, like all good girls, we waxed her legs.  For you furniture up-cycle rookies out there, furniture wax is like good lotion for our woody friends.  It is gentle, nourishing, and gives back a matted sheen often lost by years of neglect and often dry conditions.

The Sundance Catalog will be calling, just you wait.

She’s for sale in “the goods”, the shoppe at sugarSCOUT.com

flip that frame sister. {i call a do-over.}

September 12, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout 2 Comments

We have a soft spot for embroideries….you know those cuties you find on jeans, the perfect designs on nana’s linens & the stitchings that adorn the cutest of bags? The best of all would be the crewel stitching you find here on this sweet vintage wall hanging.  We found her with a tired old frame & easily brought her some new life with a lighter & fresher frame color. Consider it a little non-surgical mini-lift.

This large piece measuring 27″ x 13″ would be the perfect addition to any room.  Find this beauty in our shop along with several new items listed within the last few days.

flip that Tissue Box Cover {i call a do-over.}

August 29, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout Leave a Comment

 This is a do-over that we think will make our Nanas proud.  Though she liked the plastic on the lampshades, our Nana’s weren’t afraid of color.  These classic vintage tissue box covers are sisters who needed a makeover.  Tired in the peeling faux brass coating, we grabbed our best tangerine & aqua spray paint and some clear coat (kind of like the plastic on the lamp shades) and gave them a new life.

The tall girl has a flip top and the long and lean girl has small pins that slide in the secure her bottom.  Both are for sale in the sugarSHOP.  GO and take a peek.

from just Portly to Poppy {i call a do-over}

August 15, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: a fine piece of furniture., i call a do-over., SugarScout Leave a Comment

Few things say mid-century like that little stool your grandmother used to put her feet on when she was knitting.  This little 50’s stool received a sweet face lift with sugary mod fabric from http://modgreenpod.com/covered in tangerine colored poppies.  The legs didn’t need any liposuction though, just a soft sanding, a bit of furniture wax & a coat of matte finish clear coat poly.  You can find her in for sale in “the Goods” section at https://sugarscout.com/the-goods/.

A thrifty find indeed.  Now she’s ready for another generation of tired heels.
