just a little sneaky peek. {i call a do-over}.

July 16, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout 2 Comments

We’ve returned to our “normal” after a week in Chicago but it’s certain {WE call a do-over}.  That city is amazing…really, what’s not to love?  Gorgeous weather, delicious food, a huge variety of scouting and of course, great friends.  We’re sharing some of our fun times, adventures, finds and lastly an ultra dingy pair of chairs that will soon get a much-needed {i call a do-over}.  Stay tuned….

a little fun at Brimfield, Clark Street, Andersonville Chicago

hmmm?

The place where creative girls get their supplies.  The Crafty Beaver, Chicago.

This little cutie just in – the perfect mode of transport for your ring bearer or flower girl!  Thanks to LOLA Event Productions, we’ll be renting this beauty out for weddings.  Now it just needs a flag that says “just married”.  Book it.

These two are in major need of a little lovin’ but have some serious potential.  They’re going to be amazing when we’re done workin’ our majik.

Happy Summer Scouts.

While we’ve been away from the twinkling of the keyboard, be certain that we haven’t laid down our tools.  Summer to us is unfettered painting, line drying, buku photo lighting & cocktail hours that begin at 3pm.  We wouldn’t let a little camping get in the way of flipping goods.

Scout East worked some serious majik on this little desk and booked it as a custom do-over for lucky college student, Sarah, whose parents chose sugarSCOUT instead of IKEA.

No brainer.  If you’re looking for a college dorm room that looks like the girl next door……and the next door…..and the, well………you get the idea.

This girl had little shame to begin with, so where to go when your beginnings are already pretty good?  Just like any good room arrangement, a little mix up goes a long way.  Fresh eyes, fresh desk.

Happy Day Scouts.

College Bound and looking for a little sugar for your new crib?  Visit us in the shop for some fresh dorm room picks like these:

a train case charging station

vintage twin sheet sets

vintage pencil holder

oval message chalk board

from mundane to Mod. {i call a do-over}

June 11, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: a wicked good idea., i call a do-over., SugarScout Leave a Comment

This is a page out of the pre-sugarSCOUT archives.  And while the home grown photos aren’t as sexy we’d like, the result is still one of our faves.

OK, raise your hand if you have an ugly stair runner in your house…….waiting, waiting……..ok, now, what if we told you that you have the super power to solve that problem?  Right, some of you are echoing our early sugarSCOUT sentiments.  Is there such a thing as a cute stair runner pattern?  Hmmmm.  And if there is……do I have to hold a lemonade stand to pay for it……….every day for a year?

Specimen.  Classic Menard’s Victorian style stair runner.  And really, not to be a snob or anything, it’s not all that bad.  In someone’s home other than mine.  It’s just not my thing.  To dark and burgundy doesn’t trip my trigger.  At least not in this application.  Cost effective, yes.  Most ready made stair runners are not that expensive and are easily replaceable.

But we started to thinking, there has to be an option to less slippery stairs that is affordable and outside the 7+ odd choices that reside at Lowes, Home Depot, and Menard’s.  Don’t get me wrong, I love these places and have made many friends of those employees, but every source has it’s design limitations.

So we went to one of our fave scouting venues, Overstock.com.  And the options were endless.

-measure the length of your stairs and the width your runner will need to be.

-choose a style of carpet you like that is available in a large enough size to fit your dimensions.

-find a local rug showroom that can cut and rebind carpet, give them your dimensions, and have it finished it off.

Now your’re ready to replace your runner.

The biggest challenge.  The thickness of the new carpet, will no doubt be thicker than a standard runner.  Plus, it’s going to wear better and be more comfy on your tootsies…….Minus, it’s takes some good Moxie to work the carpet under the stair rods.

Drumroll please………

(but squint your eyes to ignore the poor photograph)

We hope you love it.  We do.

3 sneek peeks. {i call a do-over.}

June 4, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout 1 Comment

Since the sugarSCOUT project cue is growing, we have more projects in process than completed right now.  These two goodies are commissioned pieces for our sweet clients Tiffany and Sarah.  Tiffany is designing her new home in Texas and we’re thrilled she’ll be including this great mid-century chair.  The transformation will be dramatic…stay tuned.

sneek peek #1:

Sarah and her sweet mom, Lisa, have been working to design Sarah’s first grown-up apartment.  They chose the sugarSCOUT caned chair you might recognize as one of our early {i call a do over.} projects & will also be adding this little tufted headboard.

sneek peek #2:

Once Sarah has her apartment put together, we’ll share what we’ve come up with.  For now, here is the 3rd seek peek of the lonely caned chair waiting for the headboard (and sugarSCOUT desk).

from boring to ba-da-bling. {i call a do-over.}

My general rule is always look better than you feel.  And I have to say, it works.

But why start with the jewels, when you can start with the box they’re living in?  After all, a little sparkle can make all the difference.  For instance, last week, my fellow scout had a birthday, this week is mine……..so in her honor, I wore the sparkly birthday gift she gave me last year.  A gorgeous necklace that defies beauty at every twinkle.

Each time I walked by a window, saw myself in my computer screen reading a parent email of complaint, or even in the student bathroom where glamour is definitely not the order of the day……..i felt happy, just looking at it.

But back to the box.

This little wooden love was scouted from one of our fave thrift stops……….but we knew she had a brighter future.  I mean, look at her, even stripped down she’s cute.

(OK, I will not repeat that phrase in front of my 4-year-old daughter, but you get what I mean)

We began with a good clean up and sanding.  The red velvet interior needed some TLC and the exterior color was a no-brainer.  I was dying to try some type of relief along her side and did so by staining the area to be stenciled.  After the stain was dry, I applied a layer of contact paper and began to draw out the design.  The tricky part was certainly the careful cutting of the pattern around the curves and funky lines.  In addition, I was worried about the paint bleeding under the negative area so I decided to apply a coat of clear spray paint to seal the edged of the contact paper before adding the first coat of turquoise.  Crazy enough…it worked.  I just love how the crisp line of the floral relief came out.  Hope you do too!  She, and many sparkly bits to place inside, can be found in the sugarSCOUT shoppe!

surprises all around {i call a do-over.}

May 14, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout Leave a Comment

Today’s {i call a do-over.} was full of surprises from beginning to end.  These two beautiful chairs landed at the sugarSCOUT east studio thanks to our friend Kristin.  She was passing by a yard sale, spied this lovely mid-century pair & knew they screamed sugarSCOUT.  First of all thank you Kristin!

The second surprise was in our buyer Kimberly.  She purchased them from our Etsy shoppe as a gift for her mom.  Surprise mom!

Finally, the reveal was the best surprise of all.  Kimberly had this lovely pair reconditioned and upholstered in an amazing, refined and sophisticated ikat fabric for her mom.  Well done Kimberly.

custom charging station {i call a do-over.}

May 7, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout 2 Comments

Our sweet client, Jessica, recently contacted us looking for a custom charging station.  She wanted something more vintage in feel, rather than retro.  If you’ve seen the charging stations in our Etsy shoppe or via our Design*Sponge feature, you’ll remember the charging stations we’ve created have had a funky retro vibe.  When Jessica came knocking, we began the search for a vintage piece of luggage to transform into the perfect gadget wrangler. We hope she loves it as much as we do.Just give us a shout if you’re looking for a charging station in a particular color or style.  If you want to tackle this project on  your own, find the step-by-step instructions on our D*S feature here.

from damaged to DARLING {i call a do-over.}

May 1, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout 6 Comments

This little beauty required serious elbow grease, sanding & several coats of paint but we think we’ve transformed her from damaged to darling.  After the initial repair of some serious veneer issues & hard core sanding of the nasty bits on it’s top, this sweet piece of furniture is fit for those pretty linens, darling sweaters or a pile of jeans.

Unfortunately, we’re not offering this piece in our Etsy shoppe.  However, if you have a piece you’d like painted, just let us know.

We’d like to thank our friend Barb Blair from Knack Studios for her inspiration and wonderful tutorials.  Thanks Barb!  We dig you.

TWO simple flips {i call a do over.}

We love a good excuse to bust out the paints.
Both of these, and many other sweet scouts can be found in our Etsy shoppe.
