Oh Baby! Vintage Quilt Bunting :: new in the sS shop.

May 7, 2014 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: a little sugar., SugarScout 1 Comment

Our vintage quilt bunting was one of the most popular items at the Spring Junk Bonanza show in April.  We even used it to trim the top of our booth (see the last image). Our friend Molly purchased this gorgeous piece and used it in a recent photo shoot….thanks Molly!

Each string of bunting is approximately 7 feet long and includes 11 – 13 flags.  Head over to the sugarSCOUT Etsy shop to find out more….Vintage Quilt Buntingbunting imagebunting 1bunting bwjunkbonanza

from bargain belt to beautiful headband. {a little sugar.}

August 8, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: a little sugar., a wicked good idea., i call a do-over., SugarScout Leave a Comment

How many times have you walked by the thrift store rack of belts and seen 25 little girls d-ring belt cast offs hanging there?

Let me hit that for you, LOTS.

Well, and it’s no surprise.  If you’re like us, just getting the clean outfit ON, and in reasonably unwrinkled condition is a miracle all on it’s own.  Procuring a matching belt is not high on the priority list.

Until……….

you consider what you can do with these little 50 cent prizes.

Step by Step:

1.  Book those bargain belts.  Grosgrain, canvas, woven…….you pick.

2.  Decide what type of headband works best for you or your little.  Hard band.  Elastic.  Tie.

3.  Unless you want to use the D ring as a design element, remove it, or any other waist fastener.  We keep all of them, you never know what the next up cycle will bring.

4.  Many belts are double thickness already.  Use this primo opportunity to do LESS work.  Slide your hard band, elastic, or extra length tie between the layers with the right length for the head you’re fitting.

5.  Stability.  Headbands are dead in the water if you don’t want to wear them because they don’t provide optimum function.  Here are some tools that we use to make them more functional.

– apply soft or hard Velcro to hold them in place on the interior side of the band.

– apply a strip of hot glue to give it some grab.

– add a few thread loops inside to insert bobby pins for extra hold.

6.  We don’t discriminate when it comes to hair pretties (cocktails are another story).  If you’re belt find is too small for a headband, make a barrette, hair clip, book mark, purse handle or anything else that requires a little kapow.

7.  Next time you’re thrifting………..book these cheap finds.  You won’t regret it.  They’re easy to hang on to because they don’t take up a lot of room.  Plus, they are also perfect for gift wrapping.

Special thanks to the following folks from whom we borrowed their photography expertise.  You’re awesome.

the simple joy of Sidewalk Chalk. {a little sugar.}

June 13, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: a little sugar., SugarScout, Uncategorized Leave a Comment

It’s SUMMERTIME, break out the cheap thrills.

Are you NOT one of those families that have endless bankroll to entertain the kids in the summer?

Well, even if you are, we aren’t.  And we know that the best kid fun is a blend of creativity, self expression (and self entertainment), physical activity & neighborhood collaboration.  With that, we give you

the simple joy of sidewalk chalk.

…

{sidewalkchalk.org}

From making your own (thank you HipsterHostess) to coloring the neighborhood, sidewalk chalk is a must for your summer arsenal.

{HipsterHostessBlog}

Some of the greatest fun can be had in putting themselves in their artwork.  Tracing bodies, hands, and making oneself king.

{Wave Avenue Blog}

Though the merits of Hopscotch can’t be argued in terms of the practicality and price, it is amazing that we don’t see more of it.  All the brain research shows that when kids make their own fun, it is more lasting, infectious, and impressionable than nearly anything else you can give them.

Screen time & technology have their place.  But teaching kids to entertain themselves far surpasses any advantage technology has.  We blogged last week on some of our favorite Albert Einstein quotes.  One being…..

{BuiltToInspire}

…….and there’s no doubt that sidewalk chalk qualifies.

So, take the kids outside, give them a $10 bucket of sidewalk chalk and tell them to make the driveway a circus (not your living room).  You will be amazed at what they come up with.

a sweet solution. maybe. {a little sugar.}

May 23, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: a little sugar., SugarScout Leave a Comment

If I had to list one of my least favorite tasks in the house, it has to be organizing clothing. Hands down.

It’s boring.  It’s redundant.  It’s never-ending. Just icky.

I often choose to ignore it until it piles up, which results in hating it even more.

In addition, I’m not setting a very good example for the littles in the house.

Maybe a chalkboard dresser would add some fun to the business of wrangling our duds .

a SWEET Mother’s Day. {a little sugar.}

May 16, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: a little sugar., SugarScout Leave a Comment

It’s certain we are blessed in this life & we wake grateful each day for the love that surrounds us.  The love of 5 kind, humble, happy, empathetic children are at the top of the list.  This weekend we celebrated Mother’s Day with our little sugars….check out a sampling of the sweet gifts we’ve received.This handmade cribbage board was crafted by a very patient 11 year old.  He drilled each and every one of those holes himself, even busting out a soldering iron to burn in the lines.hmmm….wonder what president she was referring to?If you’re curious…the practical gift was an orbital sander. That’s normal right?

it’s chore TIME {a little sugar & a wicked good idea.}

May 10, 2012 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: a little sugar., a wicked good idea., SugarScout 1 Comment

Our kids know the drill.  Make your bed.  Brush your teeth.  Put away your laundry.  Pick up your toys.  Feed the dog.  Do your homework.  Set the table. And on and on and on.  Although they know what their chores are, reminders are needed quite often.  When we saw this great idea from Rachel at Smile & Wave, we began the hunt for a vintage time card holder.

Start by taking quick & easy snapshots of the chores you would like completed each day.  After they’re printed, glue the images onto thick paper or cardboard.  Each day, the chores are spread out in the card holder & as your {little sugar} completes the task, that card can be moved to the DONE slot.

If you’d like to start your hunt for the perfect vintage time card holder, here’s a good place to begin.
