pet parents unite. {a little sugar.}

September 14, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: a little sugar., SugarScout Leave a Comment

Today, we have a bit of a fun twist on our normal Wednesday nod to the shorties, babies, and just generally the littles in our lives. PETS. Pets + kids, pets – kids, either way, pets are as much as a part of the family unit and need to be spoiled a bit too.  We have so many friends that simply adore their little furry nuggets and we’re thinking an up cycled vintage piece would be the perfect addition to their arsenal.

Miles and Aimee are the brains behind Atomic Attic, a super fun Etsy shop full of gorgeous vintage items. This duo clearly has a passion for giving unusable things a new, fresh look.  Miles and Aimee have created a line of upcycled pet beds made from vintage suitcases, and bases from chairs and tables.  We came across Atomic Attic through a great site perfect for the canine lover, Dog Milk.  They describe their site as “a place where modern dog lovers can discover new products and sniff out what’s beyond the chain pet stores.”

typity Type type. {gosh. that’s good.}

September 13, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: gosh. that's good., SugarScout Leave a Comment

“Vintage typewriter” conjures up connotations of tapping keys, assertive strokes, and the feeling that what you are typing is real. As we’ve begun this adventure, it seems what we find sweetest about the SCOUT is the story behind each item.  Can you just imagine the stories these vintage typewriters hold? Not only are they so beautiful, but many are completely restored to working condition.  I’m drooling into my modern Mac right now.

Gosh. that’s REAL , real good.

Just like any good pieces, many times they’re better in a collection.   We just love how gorgeous these are when placed together.  If you get lucky enough to find two, use them as bookends!

In addition to the machines themselves, we dig any good typewriter font.  Find them free at www.dafont.com.

flip that frame sister. {i call a do-over.}

September 12, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout 2 Comments

We have a soft spot for embroideries….you know those cuties you find on jeans, the perfect designs on nana’s linens & the stitchings that adorn the cutest of bags? The best of all would be the crewel stitching you find here on this sweet vintage wall hanging.  We found her with a tired old frame & easily brought her some new life with a lighter & fresher frame color. Consider it a little non-surgical mini-lift.

This large piece measuring 27″ x 13″ would be the perfect addition to any room.  Find this beauty in our shop along with several new items listed within the last few days.

As much we fancy re-purposed items, at sugarSCOUT, we appreciate good ideas executed well.  This is one amazing way to create a beautiful biffy. How lovely are these dressers used as vanities? So clever, so original, so wicked good.

Put this in the project queue.  Done.

it’s all in the mix. vintage textiles & peachy prints in action. {gosh. that’s good.}

What’s not to love about the use of vintage prints?  They’re are just so fun to mix and play with.  One of our sweetest scouts to date is this lovely antique triptych.  She began as a awkward trio of mirrors and after a good cleaning, some shoring up and a coat of the perfect aqua this girl was ready for a mix of vintage fabrics.  It’s ready for your wall & photos & can be found in our sugarSHOP.

Next time you have a desire to mix up the look in your casa, don’t hesitate to scout your local shoppes, rummage sales or in your nana’s attic.

At sugarSCOUT, we admire the one who does it best …..

Miss Dottie Angel.

flip that Tissue Box Cover {i call a do-over.}

August 29, 2011 by Sara Garcia Filed Under: i call a do-over., SugarScout Leave a Comment

 This is a do-over that we think will make our Nanas proud.  Though she liked the plastic on the lampshades, our Nana’s weren’t afraid of color.  These classic vintage tissue box covers are sisters who needed a makeover.  Tired in the peeling faux brass coating, we grabbed our best tangerine & aqua spray paint and some clear coat (kind of like the plastic on the lamp shades) and gave them a new life.

The tall girl has a flip top and the long and lean girl has small pins that slide in the secure her bottom.  Both are for sale in the sugarSHOP.  GO and take a peek.

mr. Si. ~ you ‘da man {a spirit that moves.}

Mr. Albert Siedlecki discovers, after 40 years of teaching, that it is a gift. We have all been touched by an extraordinary teacher & are grateful for their dedication, commitment & ability to use their gift. Summer is coming to an end & we are thinking about all of  those teachers out there who have touched hundreds of lives.  Time to embrace those first day of school butterflies & TEACH!

It is indeed a gift.

“It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the air force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber.”

Lincoln’s Letter to his Son’s Teacher

He will have to learn, I know,
that all men are not just,
all men are not true.
But teach him also that
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish Politician,
there is a dedicated leader…
Teach him for every enemy there is a friend,

Steer him away from envy,
if you can,
teach him the secret of
quiet laughter.

Let him learn early that
the bullies are the easiest to lick…
Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books…
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky,
bees in the sun,
and the flowers on a green hillside.

In the school teach him
it is far more honorable to fail
than to cheat…
Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas,
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong…
Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people,
and tough with the tough.

Try to give my son
the strength not to follow the crowd
when everyone is getting on the band wagon…
Teach him to listen to all men…
but teach him also to filter
all he hears on a screen of truth,
and take only the good
that comes through.

Teach him if you can,
how to laugh when he is sad…
Teach him there is no shame in tears,
Teach him to scoff at cynics
and to beware of too much sweetness…
Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he’s right.
Treat him gently,
but do not cuddle him,
because only the test
of fire makes fine steel.

Let him have the courage
to be impatient…
let him have the patience to be brave.
Teach him always
to have sublime faith in himself,
because then he will have
sublime faith in mankind.

This is a big order,
but see what you can do…
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son!

~ Abraham Lincoln
